Do you need to book the Van Gogh Museum in advance?
Yes. Tickets are sold online with a time slot and there is no ticket desk at the museum. One to two weeks ahead is fine outside summer; make it three to four from June to August.
Can you buy Van Gogh Museum tickets on the day?
Sometimes, online, for an awkward slot. In July and August, often not at all. Do not travel to the Museumplein hoping to sort it out there.
Is the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum better?
Different jobs. The Van Gogh is one artist, two hours, and hits hard. The Rijksmuseum is a national collection you could spend a day in. If you only do one and you are here for the paintings, do the Van Gogh — but book it, because the Rijksmuseum will still sell you a ticket that afternoon.
