Booking is mandatory but rarely scarce. You need a time slot to get through the pyramid, and three days out is usually enough to pick the one you want.
THE BIG QUESTION

Either, and it depends how you feel about maps. Solo works if you pick your rooms in advance and accept that you will lose fifteen minutes somewhere near the Egyptian antiquities. A guided highlights tour buys you two hours of route-finding and a reason for each stop, which is genuinely useful on a first visit. Do not pay extra purely for skip-the-line: your timed ticket already is skip-the-line.
