Go solo. The building is a converted railway station laid out over three floors, the signage is good, and the collection explains itself better than almost any other major museum. A guided Impressionist tour is a reasonable buy if you want the argument between Manet and the Salon spelled out, but it is a nice-to-have rather than the difference between understanding the place and not.

Not really. Booking two to five days ahead lets you pick a time and skip the ticket line, but same-day slots are usually available except on the first Sunday of the month, which is free and heaving.
Is Musée d'Orsay better than the Louvre?
