Belém Tower

Is Belém Tower worth booking?

71 SCORE
Maybe — it depends. Book Ahead

Small tower, one narrow spiral staircase, traffic-light entry system. The queue outside is long and the queue inside is worse. Worth booking; not always worth doing.

Best for

  • First-time visitors who want the postcard and the view from the top
  • Anyone already holding the combo ticket with the monastery
  • Photographers at 09:00, before the coaches unload
  • Kids who like turrets, cannon holes and a rhino carved by someone who had never seen one

Skip if

  • Stairs are an issue — it is one spiral, both directions, no lift
  • You are claustrophobic. The staircase is genuinely tight
  • It is 15:00 in July and the line is past the bridge. The outside is the good bit anyway
  • You have one day in Lisbon. This is a nice tower, not a great one

Our pick

Go on your own. There is not enough tower here to justify a guide, and the guided Belém walks spend most of their time outside it. Buy the skip-the-line entry, go at opening, and give the twenty minutes you save to the pastelaria instead.

Lisbon

Frequently asked

Is Belém Tower worth visiting?

From the outside, always — it is free to look at and it is the best thing on that stretch of river. Inside is a maybe: small rooms, a tight staircase and a decent view, for about 45 minutes of your day.

How long is the queue at Belém Tower?

Thirty to ninety minutes in season without a pre-booked ticket. Capacity inside is capped at around 150 people, so the door only opens as fast as people leave.

Can you buy Belém Tower tickets at the door?

Yes, and that is exactly the queue you are trying to avoid. Same price online, and the timed slot means you turn up when you say you will.
