Doing it yourself is cheap — the train from Rossio costs about €2.50 and runs every twenty minutes — but you still have to hold a timed Pena ticket, and the 434 bus queue on an August afternoon is its own small tragedy. Take the small-group tour if you have one day and want three sites; go independent if you have been before, or if you would rather see two places properly than four in passing.

Do I need to book Pena Palace in advance?
Yes. Entry is timed in half-hour windows with a fixed cap per slot, and there is no standby queue that reliably gets you in. In summer the good morning windows are gone four to six weeks ahead.
Can you do Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon without a tour?
Easily. Train from Rossio to Sintra takes about 40 minutes and costs roughly €2.50. The catch is the 434 bus up the hill, which in season means a long queue at both ends, and a Pena ticket you must have bought already.
How much time do you need in Sintra?
A full day for two palaces. Pena plus Quinta da Regaleira with lunch is eight hours door to door from Lisbon. Anyone promising you four sites before dinner is selling you a coach seat.
