The mountain does not sell out. The decent tours do, especially in cherry blossom season, when the Chureito Pagoda shot becomes a national sport. Book two to three weeks ahead, six to eight in April.
THE BIG QUESTION
We compared both, factor by factor.
Take the tour, with one exception. If you are confident on Japanese transport and travelling light, the express bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko costs about a fifth of a guided day and gives you the lake at your own pace. For everyone else the packaged day earns its money, mostly by removing decisions at 6am.
See the tour →Two to three weeks most of the year. Six to eight weeks from late March to mid-April, when every blossom-season group tour from Tokyo is fighting over the same coaches.
On a clear day, yes. On a cloudy one you have spent five hours in traffic to look at grey. Check the forecast, and book something with a free cancellation window if you can.
Easily. The Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko express bus takes about two hours and costs roughly 2,000 yen each way. You lose the 5th Station and the guide, and you gain the whole day.
